Kotabaru, South Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - Seventeen people were dead after a boat capsized at around 12.00 Eastern Indonesia Time in the Tanjung Dewa waters in South Kalimantan hit by high waves.

"Right now 13 of the dead victims are kept at the general hospital and four others in Geronggang and Tanjung Batu hospitals," head of Kotabaru health service, Cipta Waspada, said here on Monday.

Around 33 people were found safe and are now receiving intensive treatment at the general hospital in Kotabaru, he said.

The KM Martasiah left the Panjang port in Kotabaru at around 10am local time and capsized at around 12.00 hours or around 1.5 to 2 hours after sailing.

The boat with around 80 people on board capsized after being hit by strong winds and high waves.

The boat also carried goods including motorcycles, basic necessaries and household stuff for sales in Geronggang market.

Kotabaru district head H Irhami Ridjani said such an incident had already happened many times.

"This could not happen again and officials concerned have to escort any boat carrying passengers and goods to the markets in inland regions," he said.

He said the officials must also impose tight supervision regarding the number of passengers and boat`s seaworthiness.
