Ankara (ANTARA News/Xinhua-OANA) - Turkey`s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) is leading in the parliamentary elections on Sunday, local media cited initial calculations as saying.

Counting of 90.3 percent of the national votes put the AKP`s share of votes at 50.6 percent currently, ahead of the main opposition Republican People`s Party (CHP) with 25.6 percent, and the second biggest opposition party Nationalist Movement Party ( MHP) with 13.2 percent, Turkish channel NTV reported.

According to the votes, the AKP could collect 327 seats in the parliament, the CHP could get 136 seats and the MHP 56 seats, said the report.

Independent candidates were shown to get 6.1 percent of votes and 32 parliamentary seats.

Supporters, mostly young people, are gathering in front of the AKP headquarters in Ankara to celebrate their victory and wait for AKP leader Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to make a public speech, live TV pictures showed.

More than 50 million Turks were estimated to go to ballot boxes on Sunday to elect 550 lawmakers out of 7,492 candidates from 15 political parties and 203 independent candidates.

Pre-election opinion polls showed the ruling party AKP could get 42 percent to 48 percent of votes to win a third consecutive term in office. The CHP was expected to get 25 percent to 30 percent of votes while the MHP could win 11 percent to 13 percent. (*)
