Padang, W Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Chairman of the Regional Representatives Assembly Irman Gusman asked here Monday the government to immediately stop the sending of Indonesian informal workers (TKIs) to Saudi Arabia, as a consequence of the execution by beheading of an Indonesian maid there last Saturday.

He said such government attitude was necessary with a view to protecting Indonesian workers employed in Saudi Arabia.

"The government needs to be firm by stopping the sending of Indonesian workers to Saudi Arabia," he said.

He added that the government needs to improve the recruitment, sending, placement, and protection of Indonesian workers.

He said that the Indonesian workers to be sent abroad for employment need to be provided with adequate skills so that they would earn the respect of their employers.

With regard to the fact that many TKIs are involved with the law, Irman Gusman asked the government to give them real protection.

He said to prevent TKIs from getting involved with the law, an effective resolution would be needed between the two countries and close cooperation in their placement.

"The Indonesian government also needs to tighten legal regulations to preventing violence and providing legal assistance to problem TKIs," he said. (*)
