Pekalongan, Central Java (ANTARA News) - PT Korea Surimi Co. from South Korea plans in cooperation with the Pekalongan city administration to invest in fish processing in the Central Javanese town.

Pekalongan Mayor Basyir Achmad said here on Saturday PT Korea Surimi Co. plans to build a "surimi" (fish-based food product) factory with an investment of US$10 million.

"This will be a big opportunity to make the town a fish city (minapolitan)" he said.

The city`s head of agriculture, animal husbandry and marine resource service, Chandra Herawati, said the South Korean company`s interest in investing in the town emerged following a visit to that country by several heads of the town`s services last month.

While in South Korea they held business meetings with the association of fish cut producers. "At a meeting in Busan PT Korea Surimi Co. expressed its interest to build a surimi processing plant in Pekalongan," she said.

She said the realize its plan the company officials plan to visit the town to conduct a study.

The capacity of the plant is expected to reach 10,000 tons that will require 30,000 to 50,000 tons of fish.

"The product needs certain fish which is only found in the sea north of Java Island," she said.
