"We are not like that. The police only wanted to be quick," the head of the National Police`s public relations division, Inspector General Anton Bachrul Alam, said at a meeting with media persons here on Friday.
He made the statement in response to a question on the recent statement of former Muslim Student Association (HMI)chairman Akbar Tanjung regarding the police questioning of Anas in Blitar, East Java, on July 26 on his defamation and slander charges against former Democrat Party treasurer Nazaruddin.
Anas who is also a former HMI executive hailing from Blitar reported Nazaruddin to the police over his accusation sent through a short message service that Anas and some other Democrat Party politicians were involved in corruption linked to the SEA Games athletes village project in Palembang, South Sumatra, and in budget manipulation.
Anton Bachrul Alam said the police would follow up the questioning by confiscating evidence linked to the SMS message on July 30.
"The evidence to be confiscated include a hand-phone linked to the SMS message and other things connected with the case," he said.
Regarding the results of Anas` questioning, Anton said they could not yet be disclosed "because the investigation is not yet finished."
On Nazaruddin`s present whereabouts he said the police until now were still searching him but because he was abroad the police could not just arrest him but needed to cooperate with the local police.
"That is a mere rumor," he said when asked whether Nazaruddin was now in Argentine. Nazaruddin`s whereabouts cannot as yet be disclosed, he said.
He said the police had already sent a team to hunt Nazaruddin in cooperation with the international police.
Nazaruddin who has been named a suspect in a bribery case linked to the SEA Games project fled to Singapore a day before the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) requested a travel ban for him.
The police have issued a red notice in their effort to bring him home.
