Those who caused damage, hurt or killed people will face the law based on the degree of their guilt,"Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The government through the law enforcers will take action against parties violating the law in connection with the communal clashes in Puncak Jaya and the shooting incident in Abepura, Papua, the chief security minister said.
"Those who caused damage, hurt or killed people will face the law based on the degree of their guilt," Political, Legal and Security Coordinating Minister Djoko Suyanto said at the Presidential Office here on Tuesday.
He said that the Papua Police and the relevant agencies were investigating the case. Police had taken the situation under control, however.
Djoko has reported the incidents to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
He hoped that clashes which were fueled by discontent with regard to regional head elections would not happen again.
The chief security minister called on political parties to provide political education for their cadres and supporters.
Two groups of residents in Puncak Jaya district, Papua were involved in communal clashes in the village of Kimak, Ilega region, claiming the lives of 19 people. They were hit by arrows and stones.
The clashes took place on Saturday (July 30 ) at 2 pm Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT) and on Sunday (July 31) at 6 a.m.
The clashes broke out following the rejection of Simon Alom as a candidate for the Puncak district head election by the local General Election Commission (KPU).
Simon Alom was rejected by the KPU because the Gerindra (Great Indonesia Movement) Party withdrew its support for Simon`s candidacy.
As a result, Simon`s supporters were angry and attacked the people of the Gerindra Party.
In the meantime, an incident also occurred in Abepura. Three civilians and one military officer were killed. They were shot and stabbed by unidentified personnel at around Kampung Nafri village 3.15 a.m early on Monday.(*)
