Palangka Raya, C Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - Head of the Central Kalimantan Board of Statistics (BPS) Panusunan Siregar said according to constant prices of gross regional domestic products (PDRB) the province`s economic growth in the second quarter of 2011 increased 6.43 pct.

"The mining and quarrying sector increased 25.83 pct, financial, leasing and corporate services 13.04 pct, electricity, gas and clean water 12.57 pct," Panusunan Siregar said in Palangka Raya Friday.

He said the growth in the mining and quarrying sector was prompted by the increase in coal production in the area of Barito river. The high growth in the financial, leasing and corporate services sector shows increased economic activities, especially in the real sector.

"The increase in the real sector also raised the intermediate function of banks and corporate services," he said.

He added that the development was apparent in the operation of new banks in Central Kalimantan while economic activities also increased. Likewise demands for energy also increased, causing electricity, gas, and clear water also to grow at a high rate.

"The highest economic growth rate in the second quarter of 2011 is experienced by the mining and quarrying sector, trade, hotels and restaurants," he said.

He said the two sectors contributed a growth respectively of 2.43 pct and 1.10 pct, while the agricultural sector is the biggest contributor in Central Kalimantan`s PDRB, with a growth contribution of only 0.13 pct.

"One of the factors causing an economic growth fluctuation between the different quarters are the seasons," he said.

In addition, he added, growth fluctuations are experienced by agriculture, especially the sub sectors food crops and plantations, affecting trade, hotels and restaurants.

"Electricity, clear water, finance, leasing and services continued to grow positively in each quarters, while other sector are still fluctuating," he said. (*)
