Law and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar said here on Wednesday that the government hoped Nazaruddin would be deported and for that purpose the ministry had sent an official letter on the revocation of Nazaruddin`s passport.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian government is waiting for Nazaruddin`s deportation by the Colombian government, or otherwise will ask for his extradition although the two countries have no extradition agreement, according to a minister.

Law and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar said here on Wednesday that the government hoped Nazaruddin would be deported and for that purpose the ministry had sent an official letter on the revocation of Nazaruddin`s passport.

But in case the Colombian government did not deport the former treasurer of Democrat Party, the ministry has prepared a letter on request to extradite Nazaruddin, who has been named a corruption suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa earlier said the Colombian government has agreed to turn over M Nazaruddin - who was arrested in Cartagena for carrying a false passport last Sunday - to Indonesia.

Marty said the Colombian government had finally accepted certain legal arguments the Indonesian government had forwarded and then agreed to hand Nazaruddin over to Indonesia.

"We heard from our representative in Bogota, Colombia, that the government of the country has accepted the legal arguments that we had put forward," Marty said at the Presidential Palace complex.

Marty said the Colombian government had sought formal communication with Indonesia`s Foreign Affairs Ministry and asked about the legal considerations or reasons of Indonesia`s request for his immediate repatriation.

He said that after studying the legal considerations from Indonesia, Colombia would hand Nazaruddin to its immigration office.

"At 5 pm Colombian time today (Wednesday), Nazaruddin will be handed to the Colombian immigration office and then turned over to the Indonesian government," Marty said.

Marty added that a joint team from Indonesia was now in Colombia for the handover of Nazaruddin, but he could not confirm when the handover would take place. He only said that Nazaruddin would be sent to Indonesia through a deportation mechanism.

"The term is that Nazaruddin is not extradited but deported," Marty said.(*)
