Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said he had instructed the National Police Chief to ensure the safety of M Nazaruddin as there might be people who were unhappy about his return.

President Yudhoyono made the statement before chairing a plenary cabinet meeting here on Thursday.

"I want to remind the Police chief, please ensure his safety. Safety, and once again, safety because there might be people who feel uncomfortable with his return to Indonesia ," the head of state said.

He also hoped the legal process of Nazaruddin, former treasurer of the Democrat Party, could be carried out soon, transparently and accountably.

"The people have been made confused with what has happened. Therefore, we hope the real court will talk, and not `other court` that will decide," he said.

President Yudhoyono thanked the National Police, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), and the foreign affairs ministry which have established international cooperation that led to the arrest of Nazaruddin, who has been named an international fugitive.

He expressed his optimism that the government would be able to hunt down and find other fugitives. Therefore, he asked the national police and other related parties to work hard in order to bring fugitives to Indonesia.

After being on the run in three continents for about 75 days, Nazaruddin, the former Democrat Party treasurer suspected of involvement in a corruption case, was finally arrested by Colombian Police recently.

Nazaruddin was caught in Cartagena, a small town located over 600 km from Bogota, Colombia, South America, on Sunday (August 7, 2011), by local police who suspected him of using a fake passport.
