Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo has appealed to the people not to conduct parades on main streets on the eve of Idul Fitri.

"Please do it in your own neighbourhoods," he said to newsmen here on Friday.

He said he made the appeal with regard to preventing traffic accidents which often happened during the parade and also minimizing traffic jams.

Fauzi Bowo said his appeal also applied to people living in Jakarta`s environs.

He also called on city mayors and district heads to persuade their residents not to leave their neighborhoods when conducting Idul Fitri eve parades.

"We wish they would conduct parades only at around their mosques in their neighborhoods or just within their sub-district areas," he said.

Fauzi Bowo said he has cooperated with the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Command to anticipate possible parades from the city`s vicinities.

He said the police would mobilize its personnel at border areas and would divert the parades in case they happen from entering Jakarta.

"The ban has always been issued every year because due to experience people from outside Jakarta often conduct parades in cars in a number of main streets in Jakarta," he said.

Fauzi Bowo said due to the parades many vehicles are crowded in one area causing jams.

Jakarta deputy police chief Brigadier General Suhardi Alius said the police prohibit people from parading in the main straits.

"They have to report to the police if they wish to do it so that police could lead them to assure orderliness," he said.
