Tangerang, Banten (ANTARA News) - Indonesian post offices are no longer crowded with people intending to send Idul Fitri greeting cards to relatives or friends in the runup to the festivity as they used to be in the past.

"The presence of sophisticated technology has reduced people`s interest in greeting cards," Dodik Budiantono, a postal service chief in Tangerang, Banten province, said here on Tuesday.

People now prefer greeting their relatives and friends by technological services of the internet such as Facebook social network or short message services, he said.

Dodik said the Idul Fitri greeting card postal service had continued to decrease from year to year although it still existed with companies dominating its use.

However, their number accounted for only eight percent of the total volume of the mail handled, he said.

Dodik said sending Idul Fitri greeting cards was actually more polite but people now want to be efficient and swift and therefore they turn to social networks or short text message services (SMS).

Shipment of goods through the post office ahead of the festivities however was rising, reaching up to 20 percent, he said.

He said people send parcels usually containing food, souvenirs and clothes.
