Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A total of 417 buildings were seriously damaged after a 6.7-magnitude undersea earthquake struck Subulussalam city in Aceh province and environs on Tuesday, a minister said.

The quake also caused moderate damage to 70 buildings in Subulussalam and 92 buildings in North Sumatra and minor damage to 217 houses, Social Service Minister Salim Segaf Al Jufri said here on Thursday.

The minister said the quake claimed two lives. One of them died of heart problem and the other was buried under the mud.

He expressed hope that the death toll in Tuesday`s quake would not increase.

"The quake left three people injured. They all have received medical treatment," he said.

The Social Service Ministry is preparing emergency response funds totaling Rp1 billion to handle the impact of the quake. The quake is estimated to have caused Rp50 billion in material losses.

He said emergency response measures would be introduced in affected areas for two weeks.

The epicenter of the quake which struck early Tuesday was located 2.81 degrees northern latitude and 97.85 degrees eastern longitude or 59 km northeast of Singkil Baru, Aceh province, at a depth of 78 km.

Aceh bore the brunt of a 8.9-magnitude undersea quake and subsequent tsunami on December 26, 2004 which killed more than 200 thousand people.(*)
