Padang, West Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Attorney General Basrief Arief said his office had no authority to review the investigation of the death of rights activist Munir as Amnesty International has requested.

"We are no general crime investigators and so have no authority to conduct a re-investigation," he said here on Monday.

He said the system abroad used by Amnesty International is different from that of Indonesia.

"According to the Amnesty International`s view general crime investigation is under the authority of the Attorney General while in Indonesia it is under the authority of the police," he said.

He said the general crime investigation is under the jurisdiction of the police while the Attorney General Office (AGO) only receives dossiers from police.

"Munir`s case meanwhile has been categorized as a general crime and therefore we cannot interfere in it," he said.

He said the AGO has officially received the Amnesty International`s letter requesting re-investigation of the case. "The problem however is that the authority for it is not in the hands of the AGO but the police," he said.

He said his office had been very serious in handling the case as the dossiers of the case that were sent to his office had been dealt with thoroughly.

"The AGO has been very serious in the handling of Munir`s case," he said.

He said the case had been brought to court and rulings had been produced with permanent power. "The AGO`s authority has been implemented optimally," he said.

Regarding efforts to file a judicial review of Muchdi`s case linked to Munir`s case Basrief Arief said the AGO could not file the judicial review yet .

He said based on the Law of Criminal Procedures (KUHAP) the authority to file a judicial review is in the hands of the convict and his family. "The authority is not in the hands of the AGO," he said.
