"Currently we are not using the appropriate technology, so that climate change could greatly affect Indonesian food production," said Agriculture Minister Suswono when attending the 31st World Food Day commemoration here Thursday .
According to the minister people cannot control the climate, and the government and farmers should look for alternative technologies, especially in agriculture that is able to adapt to those changes as well as being innovative.
Indonesia has been able to survive and create food self-sufficiency in the midst of a world food price crisis with the ongoing financial and economic crisis.
Therefore, the World Food Day commemoration was an important moment to raise awareness and public attention to food management at the global, regional and national levels.
The 2011 World Food Day is commemorated by the 186 member states of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), including Indonesia, which nationally observes the event every October 16, the date of FAO`s establishment.
The World Food Day commemoration in Gorontalo Province was officially opened by Vice President Boediono, FAO Director-General James McGrane, Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Forestry as well as 19 ambassadors and Consuls General of a number of friendly countries.
The series of World Food Day activities is held on 20 to 23 October 2011, with a number of agenda namely the diplomatic tour, the national food security seminars, food creation competitions and technology exhibitions.(*)
