"An explosive device was planted in a police car on a routine patrol... 200 metres (yards) from Aden`s airport," the official said, adding that the driver of the vehicle was killed and three other policemen were wounded in the attack.
The official did not specify who was behind the attack and there was no immediate claim of responsibility.
Aden is the capital of the former South Yemen which was reunited with the north in 1990.
Since the unification, residents of the southern regions have complained of discriminatory policies by the central government in the capital Sanaa, which they accuse of inequitable distribution of resources in favour of the north.
The south has also witnessed an escalation of violence since militants linked to Al-Qaeda took control of at least three cities in the southern Abyan province in May.
Yemeni security officials in particular have become a frequent target of attacks, many of which have been claimed by Al-Qaeda and their affiliates in south Yemen, known as the Partisans of Sharia (Islamic law). (*)
