Nusa Dua, Bali (ANTARA News) - Coordinating Minister for Political, Law and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto said the establishment of the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (AIPR) was something in accordance with the ASEAN Charter and referred to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC).

"The institute will function as a means to study ASEAN cooperation and contribute to peace and reconciliation in the region," Djoko said here Wednesday.

A modality will be prepared in a way to make the establishment of AIPR possible and it (AIPR) is expected to be launched when Cambodia serves as the next chair in 2012, he said.

Djoko said that was one of important achievements reached by the ASEAN Pillar of Political and Security Community during the time of Indonesia`s chairmanship.

"The ASEAN Pillar of Political and Security Community has three characteristics--first, a community on the basis of rules with common values and norms; second, an integrated, peaceful and strong region with common responsibility for comprehensive security; and third, a dynamic region with outward looking in an integrated and mutually dependent world," he said.

He added that during the period of its chairmanship, Indonesia has also achieved results regarding the defense and security cooperation in the region, whereby ASEAN has increased transparency and communication among its members.

"By being able to finalize the standard format of ASEAN Security Outlook ( ASO). ASO will take up the role as media for creating a better condition for ASEAN security cooperation which is planned for issuance in 2012," Djoko said.

ASEAN`s Politics-Security Pillar is one that has progressed significantly in the road toward creating the ASEAN Community, namely in the formation of Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon Free Zone (SEANWFZ), the strengthening of ASEAN`s capacity in conflict management and the political development in Myanmar.

In addition, the grouping has also increased the transparency of its member countries` military policies, cooperation in their defense industries, putting in place a peace-keeping center network), preparing the ASEAN single visa issuance regime and has reviewed the two-yearly APSC blue print. (*)
