Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia is inviting South Korean investors to develop its fisheries industries, Marine and Fisheries Minister Sharif Cicip Sutardjo said.

"I have invited Korea to come here to develop an integrated fisheries industry. They have promised they will bring Korean private parties here to develop a fisheries industry," Sharif said here on Wednesday after receiving South Korean Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Suh Kyu Yong.

South Korean Ambassador to Indonesia Kim Young Soon said the South Korean government was ready to become Indonesia`s partner in developing its fisheries industries and increasing the competitiveness of Indonesia`s fishery products.

"Indonesia`s fishery potentials are huge and industrialization will be very important to increase the competitiveness of its products," he said.

Sharif said the government especially would open investment opportunities in fish the processing industry to increase production and exports of fishery products.

He did not as yet give detailed information on the targets and investment needs to develop the industries or kinds of support needed by the government and Korean investors.

"This was my first meeting as a minister with them. They have asked me to design a program and later if the details are ready we will sit together again to discuss it further," he said.

Sharif said the Indonesian and South Korean governments had agreed to cooperate in the fishery sector in 2006.

The two countries also signed an agreement on Arrangement on Cooperation in Quality Control and Hygiene Safety of Exports and Imports of Fish and Fishery Products.

The cooperation, Sharif said, would cover among others development of fish species conservation, ecology tourism, integrated management of coastal zones and integrated fishery industries. (*)
