Lebak, Banten (ANTARA News) - A landslide triggered by days of heavy rains buried three houses at Gununggede village in Banten province on Monday, a spokesman said on Wednesday.

"The landslide claimed no lives as the owners of the houses had evacuated to safer areas earlier," Panggarangan subdistrict head Eka Darmana Putra said.

The landslide inflicted a loss of tens of millions of rupiahs.

He said the landslide occurred after a 15-meter hill collapsed due to heavy rains accompanied by strong winds.

The local authorities had earlier issued a warning to residents living in landslide-prone area such as hilly area and river basin area to keep watch for any potential landslide, he said.

He said two of the houses buried under soil four to six meters deep were damaged seriously and one lightly.

"We have informed the regional government of the disaster and hope for assistance to help alleviate the financial burden of the people," he said.

Head of the Lebak District Natural Disaster Mitigation Board (BPBD) Muklis asked residents living in hilly areas and river basin areas to keep watch for any landslide.

"I ask the local people to keep watch for a landslide if rains fall in the areas more than two hours," he said. (*)
