Zamboanga, Philippines (ANTARA News/AFP) - Gunmen on Monday kidnapped an Australian man living in the violence-plagued southern Philippines, the military said.

Several armed men abducted Warren Rodwell, who ran a store in Ipil town on the island of Mindanao, at about 6:00 pm, according to regional military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Randolph Cabangbang.

Cabangbang told AFP no one had claimed responsibility for the abduction.

But kidnappings for ransom, often targeting foreigners, occur frequently in parts of the southern Philippines, which is home to a Muslim separatist insurgency that has dragged on for more than 40 years. (*)
