Bantul, Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - Some 134 people in Bantul regency, Yogyakarta Special District, had been affected by leptospirosis, an infectious disease caused by rodents and dogs.

"Up to end of November 2011, 134 people has been affected by leptospirosis with 12 fatalities," an official of the Bantul health service Pramudi said here Tuesday.

He said the leptospirosis case became worst in March 2011, but from June to November 2011 the number of victims dropped with an an average of less than 10 cases.

He said according to the Imogiri subdistrict, the biggest number of victims reached 22, including 17 cases in Sedayu, 14 in Bantul, 10 in Sewon, and 8 in Jetis.

Besides mice, other animals may also cause the disease, like cows and goats.

He said in 2010 there were 116 cases of leptospirosis in Bantul with 19 deaths.

"But compared to last year the number of cases has increased, but with lesser deaths," he said.
