Banyuwangi, East Java (ANTARA News) - Search and rescue teams operating in Banyuwangi waters have found the bodies of a total of 75 illegal immigrants whose boat capsized in the sea near Prigi, Trenggalek, East Java, recently.

Banyuwangi police resort chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Nanang Masbudi said here on Thursday the joint police and military search and rescue teams meanwhile were continuing their efforts to find other bodies that might still be floating in Banyuwangi waters.

"The SAR teams have so far been able to evacuate 29 of the bodies at Plengkung beach, Tegaldlimo, Banyuwangi," he said.

He said most of the bodies were no longer intact and produced a bad odor as they had been floating in the sea for five days.

He said another body was found at Grajakan beach bringing the total number of bodies found so far in Banyuwangi to 75.

He said seven of the bodies were found in Grajakan, four in Rowobiru, two in Pancer and 34 in Plenkung.

"The KRI Untung Suropati-372 naval ship evacuated seven bodies from Grajakan in Banyuwangi consisting of four men and two women while the KRI Oswald Siahaan -354 21 bodies in Grajakan Bay in Watu Layar Island, Purwoharjo," he said.

Six immigrant bodies had also been found in Bali Island waters. So far,a total of 49 of the immigrants had survived the tragedy.(*)
