Kalianda, Lampung (ANTARA News) - Police in southern Lampung have been stepping up drug possession or transportation checks at the Bakauheni ferry harbor to prevent drug smuggling ahead of the New Year 2012, a spokesman said.

South Lampung police chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Harry Muharram Firmansyah said here on Thursday drug trafficking usually tended to increase prior to the new year and therefore police were stepping up their checks on drug possession among people passing through the ferry port to cross over to Java or after arrival from Java.

The police chief said that all vehicles, without any exception, crossing over from Sumatra to Java must be checked because they were potential carriers of illegal drugs. (*)
