Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on the people to ignore the predictions of pessimists that Indonesia would never be able to rise and get out of the various problems it was facing.

"I implore you , do not listen to pessimists," he said at a government working meeting here on Thursday.

He said Indonesia had been able to overcome challenges in various fields so far thanks to the efforts made by the people and the government.

He said perseverance had also brought Indonesia to relatively good conditions, marked by the settlement of conflicts in various regions, the implementation of direct elections, good economic fundamentals and growth, thriving democratic life, eradication of corruption, terrorism and narcotic drugs, improved public services, a hike in the composite share price index, improvement in the country`s debt rating and the improving role of the country in international relations.

He said that the key to Indonesia`s success had been political stability, social harmony, leadership and partnership.

Although Indonesia had made achievements in various fields the country still had to continue to work hard to overcome remaining shortcomings such as improving infrastructure, eliminating investment barriers, corruption and efforts in disaster management.(*)
