In India the Tata Nano carried a price tag of the equivalent of around Rp25 million - Rp 30 million and was intended for use by middle-class families comprised of four to five people.Jakarta (ANTARA News) - India`s cheap car Tata Nano is going to be launched in Indonesia some time in 2012, Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Biren Nanda said here on Thursday.
"Tata Nano`s maker, TATA Mobile, has set up an office in Jakarta and intends to produce the car here. They`ll be manufacturing the car in Indonesia and launch it hopefully this year in Jakarta," said the envoy.
He said at the initial stage of the Tata Nano`s sales drive in Indonesia, the car would be imported from India but later it would be assembled in Jakarta.
Nanda said, in India the Tata Nano carried a price tag of the equivalent of around Rp25 million - Rp 30 million and was intended for use by middle-class families comprised of four to five people.
Tata Motors began selling its "one-lakh car" in India in March, 2009. The nickname "one-lakh car" was given to the Nano because of its price of nearly one lakh or 100,000 Indian rupees (US$ 2100). It is the cheapest four-wheel motor vehicle in the world today.
The Tata Nano has become somewhat symbolic as a modern `people`s car`, often being compared to the likes of the Ford Model T and the original Volkswagen Beetle. The Nano has also become a status symbol in its home market of India, where it provides an opportunity for new car ownership for people who would otherwise never own one, and for the wealthy to join the trend.(*)
