Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Supreme Court has denied the appeals of Abu Bakar bin Abud Ba`asyir, alias Abu Bakar Ba`asyir, and sentenced him to 15 years in jail.

The Supreme Court "had tried and rejected the appeals of defendant Ba`asyir and met the appeals of the South Jakarta prosecutors," Supreme Court spokesman MA Ridwan Mansyur said at a press conference here on Monday.

Mansyur noted that the appeals court judges, including Djoko Sarwoko as the presiding judge, Haji Mansyur Kertayasa and Andi Samsan Nganro, issued the ruling unanimously.

The ruling had also reversed the High Court`s decision to cut the sentence for Ba`asyir from 15 years to nine years.

The Supreme Court judges, in their ruling, said the defendant had been proven to have committed a crime of terrorism and sentenced him to 15 years in jail.

Earlier, the South Jakarta district court had sentenced Ba`asyir to 15 years in jail.

The court judges said the chief of Jamaah Anshorud Tauhid (JAT) had been proven to have been involved in the training of a terrorist group in Aceh.

The sentence was lower than the prosecutor`s demand of life imprisonment.

Also, the Supreme Court judges did not agree with prosecutors that Ba`asyir had planned or mobilized and raised funds for the terrorist training, as stated in subsidiary charges.

The prosecutors had charged Ba`asyir with violating Article 15 in conjunction with Article 11 of Law Number 15 of 2003 on Terrorism.

The judges said Ba`asyir had been proven to have committed a crime within the subsidiary charges in violation of Article 14 and in conjunction with Article 7 of Law Number 15 of 2003 on Terrorism.

Ba`asyir appealed the verdict and the provincial court later reduced the sentence to nine years. But both Ba`asyir and the prosecutors later appealed the ruling to the Supreme Court.
