The sentence was two years lighter than what the prosecution had earlier demanded.Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A jury at the Corruption Court in Jakarta on Thursday sentenced former tax office employee Gayus Tambunan to six years in jail and a Rp1 billion fine for corruption and money laundering.
The sentence was two years lighter than what the prosecution had earlier demanded.
In reading out the court verdict, presiding judge Suhartoyo said Gayus had been conclusively and convincingly proven to be guilty of four corrupt and money laundering acts.
He had received Rp925 million and US$3.5 million from Robertus Santonius for accepting objections from PT Metropolitan Retailmart to a tax amount the company had been required to pay.
Gayus had also pocketed an amount of money related to the application of the government`s sunset policy to an amount of taxes owed by PT Kaltim Prima Coal and PT Arutmin.
The defendant was also guilty of bribery which had enabled him several times to slip out of his cell at the Brimob Kelapa Dua detention center and move freely outside.
After the verdict`s announcement, both the prosecution and Gayus said they would decide later whether or not to accept or appeal the court`s decision.(*)
