They said the mine clearance expert was originally from Estonia but was resident in the United States. The explosion happened in Dafniyah, a town 180 km west of the capital, Tripoli.
An official in Libya with the United Nations` Mine Action Service said she had no immediate comment on the incident.
During last year`s conflict, forces loyal to ousted leader Muammar Gaddafi laid mines around Dafniyah, and several other towns, to prevent rebel fighters advancing towards the capital.
Libya`s new leaders have invited foreign mine clearance experts to help deal with the problem. (*)
