The reclamation of coastal areas to be turned into commercial complexes would have a negative impact on the ecosystem and traditional fishermen living in the area.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Fisheries Justice Coalition (Kiara) said a total of 6,000 hectares of land in coastal areas in Indonesia are about to be converted into commercial and housing complexes.

"Kiara has learned that 6,472 hectares of land in coastal areas are to be converted into luxury housing complexes and trading areas," Kiara spokesman A Marthin Hadiwinata said here on Monday.

Among the areas mentioned by Marthin were the northern coastal area of Jakarta, coastal area in Semarang, Kenjeran coastal area in Surabaya, Kalasey coastal area in North Sulawesi, Manakara coastal area in West Sulawesi, Palu Bay area in Central Sulawesi, Losari and Buloa coastal area in South Sulawesi and Manado Bay area in North Sulawesi.

Other coastal areas also being converted into commercial complexes were the Lampung Bay area, Padang Bay area in West Sumatra, Balikpapan Bay area in East Kalimantan and Serangan coastal area in Bali.

Marthin said the reclamation of coastal areas to be turned into commercial complexes would have a negative impact on the ecosystem and traditional fishermen living in the area.(*)
