The small number of large customers who controls most bank funds generally do not care about customer protections," the central bank governor said.Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Three percent customers control 67 percent of bank funds in a total of 140 million bank accounts in Indonesia while 97 percent of the remaining customers control only 33 percent of the funds, Darmin Nasution said.
"The gap is wide. The small number of large customers who controls most bank funds generally do not care about customer protections," the central bank governor said here on Wednesday.
He also said, at the opening of a seminar on bank mediation, that smaller customers, whose numbers are large, often have difficulties in protecting their rights and interests with regard to banking services.
"These small customers are the ones that need mediation, and Bank Indonesia will try to optimally protect them," he said.
The chairperson of the BI Bank Mediation Team, Sondang Martha, said the number of cases of disputes between customers and banks has increased annually from 69 in 2006 to 181 in 2007, 256 in 2008, 231 in 2009, 278 in 2010 and 510 in 2011.
A breakdown of bank mediation cases over the past six years include 620 cases concerning payment systems, 581 cases regarding fund distributions, and 190 fund collection cases.(*)
