The spokesman of Region I of the Meteorology, Geophysics and Climatology Agency here, Hendra Suwarta, said the epicenter of the quake was 410 kilometers west of Sinabang and the tremor lasted about 15 seconds.
He added that the epicenter of the quake was 93.12 degrees East Longitude and 2.4 degrees North Latitude at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Based upon its epicenter and strength, the quake had the potential to cause a tsunami, according to officials.
The quake was felt across much of Aceh to Mandailing Natal and Tapanuli Tengah in North Sumatra. (ANT)
