Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA News) - The Denpasar District Court sentenced Osita Emmanuel Obumneme, 27, a Nigerian national involved in an international drug smuggling syndicate, to seven years` imprisonment.

The Nigerian defendant must also pay a fine of Rp 1 billion (over $100,000) or face an additional six months behind bars.

Prosecutors had previously demanded the Nigerian football player be sentenced to 10 years in jail.

Osita was charged with being a member of the international drug syndicate of Brett Theo Savage, 44, a South African national who was caught with crystal methamphetamine weighing 2.993 kg at Ngurah Rai Airport, Bali Province, on October 19, 2011.

The Indonesian police arrested Osita in Jakarta in October 2011 after being caught of receiving 2.4 kg of crystal methamphetamine from a drug courier.
