Code-named "Garuda Shield 2012," the exercise is led by Commander of Army National Guard Hawaii Brigadier General Hara and Indonesian Army Strategic Reserve Command (Kostrad) commander, Lieutenant General M Munir, according to information on the US embassy`s official website here Sunday.
The joint exercise is intended to increase Indonesian capacity to serve as peace keepers in United Nations peacekeeping operations. Additional objectives of the joint exercise are to strengthen military cooperation in the Pacific region, and build camaraderie and friendship between Indonesian and U.S. military forces.
Lieutenant General M Munir stated that the exercise will give participating personnel a clear understanding of their duties as UN security forces, enabling greater preparedness for UN security operations.
Lieutenant General M Munir also expressed the hope that the joint exercise will increase cooperation between the Indonesian and U.S. armies.
Brigadier General Hara called for continued joint exercises in support of UN peacekeeping operations.
