"The earthquake did not seem to have the potential to trigger a tsunami, but the big waves caused panic among fishermen," said Hadi, a local fisherman.
"We were about to go to the sea with our boats to catch fish, but suddenly we saw big waves that forced us to go back to the land," he added.
In Cianjur city, the earthquake forced people to run out of houses, office buildings and malls in panic.
According to the national meteorological, geophysics and climatology office, the quake`s epicentre was located at 7.68 degrees southern latitude and 107.14 degrees eastern longitude, 28 km below sea level, 55 km southwest of Cianjur and 80 km southeast of Sukabumi.
On Sunday morning, two earthquakes measuring 5.7 and 5.0 on the Richter scale shook Simeulue district, Aceh province, and Maluku Tenggara Barat district, Maluku province, respectively.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity. (*)
