Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan checked food prices at several markets here Wednesday, few days prior to the Islamic fasting month of Ramadhan.

"The trade ministry will carry out the price checking every day, prior and during Ramadhan, to help stabilize the basic food prices," Minister Gita said after visiting Santa and Kramat Jati traditional markets.

Either the minister, the vice minister or the trade ministry`s director generals will visit a number of markets in Indonesia to check the food prices.

The trade ministry will ensure the adequate food supply during Ramadhan and Idul Fitri Muslim Celebration by discussing the matter with various stakeholders such as the food suppliers and traders.

When checking the food prices at the Santa and Kramat Jati markets, the minister found out that the prices of food such as chili, egg, beef and chicken have increased significantly.

"But, the traders said the stock is adequate," he said.

Minister Gita urged every stakeholder to help stabilize the prices because the price hike would burden the people.

Traders are allowed to make profits but it should not be too much, he said.
