"A group of 30 people suddenly came as if they wanted to attack us."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Forty-five prostitutes have escaped from Karya Wanita Mulya Pasar Rebo, a rehabilitation facility in East Jakarta, according to a security official.

"The prostitutes, assisted by about 30 people, fled on Sunday by damaging the institution`s gates," rehabilitation officer Emil Salamun said here on Monday.

The incident unfolded after two visitors arrived at the rehabilitation centre at 7.15 am, wishing to see one of the prostitutes. The rehabilitation officials did not give permission because it was outside visiting hours.

Then, the two visitors had an argument with the security guards and started forcing their way into the aftercare centre. Amid the scuffle, about 30 more people forcefully entered the premises of the facility.

"A group of 30 people suddenly came as if they wanted to attack us," Emil said.

The security guards tried to block their entry and a fracas ensued. The perpetrators then locked up the guards and let the prostitutes out.

"One of them shouted `get out, get out` and then the prostitutes ran out. They fled from the spot on motorcycles," Emil explained.

He noted that out of a total of 85 prostitutes in the aftercare facility, there were 40 women left.

The rehabilitation officers are still investigating the case.

The incident was the first of its kind in the 53-year-old history of the rehabilitation centre.

"We were shocked because it is the first time since the house was established," Emil pointed out.

The police are currently handling the case.
