"I would like to appeal to the mass media to shift its focus from the dispute over authority between the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the National Police, to the settlement and legal process of the alleged corruption case in the Traffic Police Corps," Suyanto said during a press conference on Saturday.
He said the mass media has been focusing its energies on reporting the power struggle between the KPK and the national police to determine which body was entitled to handle the corruption
case, instead of helping find a solution.
"I will not question the legality of the case but I have to express concern with the media`s reportage, which has pitted the KPK against the police," Suyanto added.
He also pointed out that the KPK and the police should have been more transparent in their investigations in order to allow the media to monitor and report the case more comprehensively to the public.
Suyanto stressed the importance of the media`s role as a supervisor of the legal process, so that it stays transparent and in line with existing laws and legal procedures.
The KPK and the police will be unable to remain objective and join forces to eradicate corruption if the media continues to focus on their authority tussle, he added.
Meanwhile, the chief minister has also asked the KPK and the police to explain the reason behind their public disagreement.
"The public has the right to know the real reason behind the problem and receive a detailed explanation from the two institutions," he said.
