Lubukbasung, W Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Thousands of people attended a religious gathering in Agam district, West Sumatra, on Sunday to mark the third anniversary of a powerful earthquake that devastated part of the province on September 30, 2009.

The event which took place on the yard of Agam district head`s office featured noted preacher Prof Dr Salmadanis who delivered his sermon and led joint prayer recitals (dzikir).

Agam district head Indra Catri said the sermon and joint prayer recitals were intended to take a lesson from the 7.6-magnitude earthquake which killed at least 88 people, injured hundreds of others and destroyed 20,572 houses and public utilities.

The September 30, 2009 earthquake hit the hardest Malalak, Tanjung Raya, Tajung Mutiara, Lubukbasung, Palembayan, and Ampek Nagari sub-districts.

Indra said Agam is a natural disaster-prone district. The natural disasters include flood, landslide, earthquake, volcanic eruption, and whirlwind.

"Our region is located within an earthquake fault zone. So it is highly prone to earthquake," he said.

Therefore, he asked the local residents to keep watch against any earthquake, volcanic eruption and flood.

To minimize the impact of natural disasters, he said the local government, along with social organizations had organized natural disaster drills in natural disaster-prone sub-districts such as Tanjung Mutiara, Lubukbasung, Tanjung Raya, and Malalak. The activities involved people from all walks of life including students.
