"The nation's cultural values must be cultivated in the hearts and minds of the students."Pangkalpinang (ANTARA News) - The rise of student brawls in the past few days does not necessarily mean that the national education system has failed, according to the Bangka-Belitung (Babel) Culture and Education Office spokesman Wahyudin.
"I do not agree that the rise of student brawls in Jakarta is considered as a failure of the national education system, because many students in other parts of the country are not involved in any violence but are involved in outstanding achievements instead," Wahyudin noted here on Tuesday.
He pointed out that students in Babel province have never engaged in violence or brawls and therefore, what has happened in Jakarta should not be considered a reflection of the failure of the national education system.
Wahyudin opined that the rise of student brawls and violence in big cities was due to the fading of the nation`s cultural values, following the influx of unfiltered foreign culture.
"Therefore, the nation's cultural values must be cultivated in the hearts and minds of the students in order to ward off the influence of foreign culture," he noted.
Wahyudin added that character education of discipline, religion, tolerance and other values was given to the students in Babel province so that they could think twice before committing any criminal act.
