Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The re-election of US President Barack Obama will not have a significant impact on the Indonesian economy, according to a Chamber official.

"Obama`s re-election could surely have some influence on Indonesia`s economy but not much," said Mintardjo Halim, an official from the international trade affairs division of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), here on Wednesday.

Obama`s regional economic policies were always oriented to Asia, while his rival, Republican Mitt Romney, focused more on South America, he noted.

Had Romney won the election, Mintardjo added, Indonesia`s exports would have been hampered.

"I had earlier predicted that Obama would narrowly win the contest but he enjoyed a landslide victory," he said.

"This proves that the people of the United States support him," Mintardjo pointed out.

Obama won 284 Electoral College votes, while Romney got only 203.

"The United States is indeed facing difficult times and is trying to restore its economy. Yet, some fundamental changes have been made, one of them being reducing imports," Mintardjo noted.

If the United States succeeds in producing cheap gas, its economy can be back on track, he added.(*)
