Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President Boediono has stated that entrepreneurs are the drivers of change and innovation in Indonesia.

"When jobs are required to be created in certain sectors, it is the entrepreneurs who open up job opportunities. And when there is a requirement for a certain kind of product, it is the entrepreneurs who lead innovation efforts," he said during the opening of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012 at Bank Indonesia headquarters here on Monday.

`However, the importance of entrepreneurship is not reflected in the number of Indonesian people engaged in the sector at the moment," Boediono pointed out.

According to a World Bank survey held in 2008, entrepreneurs in Indonesia accounted for only 1.56 percent of the country's total population.

"In the light of this fact, we have to take note that Indonesia is in dire need of more entrepreneurs," Boediono said.

Citing World Bank data, he noted that the number of entrepreneurs in Indonesia was much smaller than Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.

"Some 4 percent of the total populations of Malaysia and Thailand are engaged in entrepreneurial activities, while it is 7 percent in Singapore," Boediono added.

Therefore, the vice president called on all parties, including government institutions, private companies and academicians, to cooperate in developing the entrepreneurial sector.(*)
