"Four shots were fired and the police chief ducked to save himself."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The investigation into the motive of shooting attempt on Poso Pesisir Utara Sub-district Police Chief Inspector-I Bastian Taruklabi is still under way, according to National Police spokesman Inspector General Suhardi Alius.

"The police have stepped up security and investigation in many areas in Poso (Central Sulawesi)," he said in an SMS sent from Poso on Thursday.

According to Suhardi, the perpetrators are members of a terrorist group based in Poso.

Earlier on Thursday, Taruklabi survived the attack of some unknown gunmen.

"Four shots were fired and the police chief ducked to save himself," the police chief of Poso district, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Eko Santoso, said from Palu, Central Sulawesi, when contacted for confirmation of the incident.

He said the attack took place at around 12.15pm local time when Taruklabi got out of his house to collect the key of his motorcycle in the yard.

"Upon hearing the shots, he ducked and ran back to the house in order to get his gun and shoot back at the attackers. However, by the time he returned, they had fled," Eko explained.

"The attackers fled towards the plantations, belonging to local villagers, amid which the official home of the police chief is situated," he said.

According to Eko, the police are still investigating the case and have discovered a projectile in the area.

"I don`t yet know about the type of the guns used by the attackers. We have to find that out," he stated.

"However, I believe these attackers are part of the group that has been responsible for the terror attacks in Poso," Eko added. ***1***
