Police officers shot Hubert on his right and left legs and chest as he tried to run away and snatch firearms from them, head of the Papua provincial police`s public relations service Adj. Snr. Comr. Gede Sumerta said on Sunday night.
By Sunday night his body was still kept at the Wamena regional general hospital, he said.
Hubert was also suspected of involvement in the attack on Pirime police precinct in Lanny Jaya district which killed three police officers.
The police tried to arrest Hubert after on Friday (Dec 14) they arrested WJ on charges of carrying ammunition, Gede Sumerta said.
Before being shot dead, police officers with the help of WJ phoned Hubert to meet on Abusak street in Kurulu area.
At the meeting, Hubert was accompanied by his four colleagues armed with machetes.
The police asked Hubert and colleagues to surrender but they refused. Instead, they attacked the police officers who later opened fire at Hubert, he said.
