"Now, such violations of human rights occur only sporadically and on a small scale, usually committed by the regional apparatus," he said here on Wednesday.
Mahfud made the statement while speaking at a discussion entitled "The Reflection and Evaluation of Law Enforcement and Human Rights in 2012".
The discussion took place at the executive board office of the Islamic-based United Development Party (PPP) here.
"Prior to the reform era, Indonesia was busy lobbying foreign countries to help it avoid a United Nations (UN) trial in connection with human rights violations. Currently, such things no longer happen," Mahfud pointed out.
"Although instances of human rights violations by the state have drastically reduced, we still have frequent cases of human rights abuse during communal conflicts," he noted.
"What is emerging now is the problem of intolerance among groups," Mahfud added.
The discussion was also attended by the deputy chairman of United Development Party (PPP), Lukman Hakim Saifuddin.(*)
