Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) said it recorded 52 cadres of political parties mired in corruption cases in 2012.

The largest number are from Golkar Party with 14 cadres, followed by ruling Democrat Party 10. PDIP 8, PAN 8 , PKB 4, Gerindra 3, PKS and PPP each two and speaker of the FakFak regional assembly with not clear political party.

They were include 21 former members of DPR and DPRD, 21 former governors/regents or city mayors, 2 party leaders and a former minister Andi Alfian Mallarangeng.

The main motive for committing corruption is believed to be raising fund to finance political campaigns in the coming general elections in 2014.

"Politicians still rely on illicit funds to finance their political campaigns ahead of general elections, Agung said.

The politicians commit corruption by abused their power, helping fix winners of tenders of government projects and embezzling state budget, he said.

Insufficient regulations on political party funding partly contribute to prompting politicians to commit corruption, he added.

The existing regulation has no stipulation banning the use of illicit funds and funds from fictitious contributors and stipulation to limit the amount of contribution from party cadres.

In addition there is transparency in the accountability of funds used for political campaigns, he added. (*)
