Jakarta (ANTARA News) - State-owned power utility firm PLN consumed 8.2 million kiloliters of fuel in 2012, or 12 percent higher than its target of 7.3 million kiloliters, its President Director Nur Pamudji said.

The PLN director told a hearing with the House of Representatives (DPR)`s Commission VII on energy affairs here on Wednesday that the increase in the fuel consumption of the state company was generated by the rise of its power sales that exceeded projection.

"We have set a sales target of 7 percent but the sales exceeded the target reaching 10.17 percent," the PLN president director told the House Commission.

However, he said the realization of fuel consumption in 2012 was lower than that consumed in 2011 which reached 11.4 million kiloliters.

"Consumption this year dropped by 3.2 million kiloliters compared with that in 2011," he said.

The consumption included fuel consumed by PT PLN Batam and PT PLN Tarakan. In terms of energy composition use in 2012 PLN consumption reaches 15 percent, or declined compared with that in 2011 which reached 23 percent.

Most of the reduction in fuel consumption was compensated with an increase in the use of coal from 44 percent in 2011 to 50 percent in 2012.

PLN`s Fuel and Gas Division Chief Suryadi Mardjoeki said meanwhile that PLN`s gas consumption in 2012 stood at 365.9 trillion british thermal units (tbtu).

"Gas use reached 105.4 percent of the projected 346.8 mbtus," he said.

Compared with the use of gas in 2011 which reached 285.7 tbtus, the use of this commodity by PLN in 2012 was lower, he added.

During the hearing, PLN Director Nur Pamudji proposed that PLN`s sales target for 2013 should be revised.

He proposed that the sales growth target which was set at 9 percent in the state budget should be revised to 10 percent.

He said that the revision was needed because the realization of electricity sales in 2012 increased by 10.7 percent.

"The economy this year is predicted to grow by 10 percent, which is similar to that in 2012, so that we also propose an increase in the electricity sales by 10 percent," Nur said.

He said that the increase in the electricity sales growth would have impact on the rise of subsidy in 2013.

The sales of electricity in 2013 was previously targeted at 184.3 Tera watt hours (TWhs). With the assumption that the electricity will grow by 10 percent, the revision of electricity sales target in 2013 should be set at 191 TWhs.

Nur also explained that PLN`s electricity sales in 2012 reached 173.8 TWhs.

"The figure of PLN`s sales realization in 2012 was far higher than the previous target of 169.1 TWhs," he said.

Thus, if compared with the sales realization in 2012 at 173.8 TWhs, the projection of 184.3 TWhs only showed a growth of 6.21 percent.

"A growth of 6.21 percent is very low," the PLN president director said.(*)
