Jakarta (Antara News) - Secretary General of the Democratic Party (PD) Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono has resigned from the House of Representatives (DPR), because he wanted to focus on working for his party.

"I officially resign as a member of the Parliament. I want to concentrate on carrying out my duties as the party`s secretary general that will consume more energy and time in the future," Edhie "Ibas" Baskoro, the second son of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, said in a press conference at the Parliament Building here on Thursday.

He apologized to the people who had voted for him in the 2009 legislative election for Est Java electoral region. He also thanked his constituents for their support and cooperation so far.

For the next one and half year, his duties as the Democratic Party`s secretary general would be heavier because of the upcoming general elections in 2014, he said. Therefore, he has to make his resignation from the parliament, he added.

Ibas will present his letters of resignation to House Speaker Marzuki Alie, the Democratic Party`s chairman, Chairperson of the Democratic Party`s faction at the Parliament Nurhayati Assegaf, and Chairman of the DPR`s Commission I Mahfuds Siddiq.

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is taking over the party`s top position after he recently relieved Anas Urbaningrum of his duties as the Democratic Party`s chairman so that he is free to concentrate on his legal troubles.

Anas was previously called by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) which is investigating alleged corruption case concerning the construction of the Hambalang Sports Center in West Java.(*)
