Malaysia hosts the world's premiere mixed team badminton championship Sudirman Cup 2013 after years of touring in Europe and China.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, May 22, 2013 (ANTARA/PRNewswire) -- For the first time in Malaysia, throngs of badminton fans come together to witness the aerodynamic shuttle spins among top players as they battle to emerge champions at the Sudirman Cup 2013 in Putra Stadium from 19-26 May.

This is the first time Malaysia is hosting the prestigious badminton championship and this edition marks its return to Southeast Asia after years of touring in Europe and China.

The highly acclaimed Sudirman Cup 2013 is organised by Badminton Association of Malaysia and supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Malaysia.

The event is also supported by the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) who has been instrumental in winning the bid to host the event right here in the shores of Malaysia. The Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) is a non-profit organisation that serves as a one-stop centre to assist meeting and event planners to bid and stage regional and international events. As a measure to further develop the international major events industry, its International Events Unit (IEU) particularly focuses on identifying and supporting major event bids on sports, arts, lifestyle and entertainment events.

The Sudirman Cup 2013 is expected to welcome an average of 40 teams from 40 countries and more than 450 international participants.

Tony Nagamaiah, General Manager of International Events Unit (IEU), Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), said, "We were excited when Kuala Lumpur won the bid to host the Sudirman Cup 2013. This is indeed a historic moment for the badminton fans in Malaysia as previously the Sudirman Cup was hosted in countries like Denmark, England, Switzerland, Scotland, Spain, Netherlands and China. Badminton fans from China, India, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Australia, India, Myanmar and Vietnam are expected to make their way to Kuala Lumpur for the match."

He added, "Malaysia is increasingly recognised as a destination of choice for such major sporting events with the availability of world-class airports, venues, facilities and not to mention the warm, hospitable yet passionate spirit of Malaysians. With years of hosting major events, Malaysia has certainly caught the world's attention."

"We are constantly looking for avenues to drive tourism into the country to support the Ministry of Tourism and Tourism Malaysia's promotional campaign of Visit Malaysia Year 2014. Last year, Malaysia managed to attract RM916million in tourism spend from tourists visiting Malaysia for major events and with our support of Sudirman Cup 2013, we hope to attract even more this year," Tony concluded.
