Hakuho Foundation, a public-interest incorporated foundation, began on June 10 accepting applications for the 9th Hakuho Japanese Research Fellowship (previously the Hakuho Japanese Language Research Fellowship Program).

-- Objectives
With the goals of further strengthening the fundamentals of international research into Japan and deepening understanding of Japan through researchers' activities, the Hakuho Foundation Japanese Research Fellowship invites to Japan leading international researchers of the Japanese language, Japanese-language instruction, Japanese literature and Japanese culture to conduct research as a resident.

-- Eligible researchers
- Japanese language and Japanese-language instruction research
International researchers researching the Japanese language or Japanese-language instruction:
University professors or associate professors with outstanding research results, or other persons with equivalent research backgrounds
- Japanese literature and Japanese culture research
International researchers researching Japanese literature or Japanese culture:
University professors, associate professors or assistant professors with outstanding research results, or other persons with equivalent research backgrounds

Eligibility (both research fields)
- Sufficient Japanese-language proficiency to be able to conduct research and interact in Japanese
- Non-Japanese nationals who reside outside Japan. (Researchers with Japanese nationality who have resided outside Japan for 10 years or more and are active in the academic community, etc., of their current country of residence will also be considered)
- Able to stay continuously in Japan for the duration of the Fellowship period

-- Fellowship content
- Business class airfares
- Residential research expenses: 300,000 yen per month
- Housing subsidy: up to 150,000 yen per month
- Relocation allowance: 300,000 yen
- International travelers' illness and injury insurance

June 10 - October 31, 2013

-- Fellowship period
Long-term (1 year): September 1, 2014 - August 31, 2015
Short-term (6 months): September 1, 2014 - February 28, 2015 (Round 1)
March 1, 2015 - August 31, 2015 (Round 2)

-- Receiving organizations
Invited Fellows will conduct their research with the cooperation of one of the following receiving organizations:
- International Research Center for Japanese Studies
- National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics
- Ochanomizu University
- Tokyo University of Foreign Studies
- Waseda University

-- Supplementary information
- Seven researchers from seven countries were invited to the 7th Fellowship
These Fellows are scheduled to present final reports of their findings in late August 2013
- Eight researchers from seven countries were invited to the 8th Fellowship
They will begin research at their receiving organizations from October 2013
