There are a lot of considerations from the city administration."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Jakarta provincial administration has dropped a plan to raise TransJakarta bus fares to Rp5,000 from Rp3,500 previously.

"After we had made recalculation we decided to maintain the TransJakarta fares at Rp3,500. As the fares are not raised we will not propose a fare hike to the Jakarta provincial legislative council (DPRD DKI)," Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo said on Wednesday.

The decision was taken to prevent TransJakarta passengers from switching to private cars or motorcycles, he said.

"There are a lot of considerations from the city administration. One of them is that we don`t want to see the number of private car users increasing and therefore, we decided not to raise the TransJakarta bus fares," he said.

Jokowi, as the governor is popularly called, said on Tuesday that the city`s public-transportation fares should be raised by a range of 20 and 43 percent to reflect inflationary pressures.

The city administration has originally planned to raise minivan fares from Rp 2,500 to Rp 3,000, medium-sized buses from Rp 2,000 to Rp 3,000, regular buses from Rp 2,000 to Rp 3,000 and TransJakarta fares from Rp 3,500 to Rp 5,000.

The fare hike is the consequence of the central government`s decision to increase the prices of subsidized gasoline from Rp4,500 to Rp6,500 a liter and the price of subsidized diesel oil from Rp4,500 to Rp5,500 a liter.
