"The people who lost jobs previously worked for coffee exporters, palm sugar factories and coffee mills," Central Aceh district head Nasaruddin said on Tuesday.
The earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale also forced 48,563 people in the district to take shelters at emergency and permanent tents, he said.
"The evacuees include those who lost their houses and then set up emergency plastic tents near their damaged houses," he said.
Central Aceh which has nearly 40 thousand hectares of coffee plantations is one of the province`s largest Arabica coffee producers. The vast majority of Central Aceh people earn their living as coffee growers.
Data from the Central Aceh district government show 33 people were killed, 33 missing, and 92 others injured seriously and 352 lightly because of the quake.
The quake also left 5,516 houses damaged heavily, 2,750 moderately and 5,593 lightly. It also damaged 77 government office buildings, consisting of 48 heavily, 20 moderately and nine lightly, 136 mosques, consisting of 36 heavily, 25 moderately and 75 lightly, and a general hospital and tens of public health service posts.(*)
